Gustavo Marrero Callicó

He is an Associate Professor at the ULPGC. He received the M.S. degree in telecommunication engineering in 1995 and the Ph.D. degree and the European Doctorate in 2003, all from the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC) and all with honors. From 1996 to 1997 he was granted with a research grant from the National Educational Ministry and in 1997 he was hired by the university as an Electronic Lecturer. He currently develops his research activities in the Integrated Systems Design Division of the Institute for Applied Microelectronics (IUMA). He has more than 110 publications in national and international journals, conferences and book chapters. He has participated in 18 research projects funded by the European Community, the Spanish Government and international private industries. He has been an Associated Editor of different journals. He has been the coordinator of the European project HELICoiD (FET, Future and Emerging Technologies) under the Seventh Framework Program. His current research fields include hyperspectral imaging for real-time cancer detection, real-time super-resolution algorithms, synthesis-based design for SOCs and circuits for multimedia processing and video coding standards, especially for H.264 and SVC.

He received the telecommunication engineer degree and the master degree in telecommunication technologies from the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain, in 2013, and 2014, respectively. Since then, he has conducted his research activity in the Integrated System Design Division with the Institute for Applied Microelectronics, University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, in the field of electronic and bioengineering. In 2015, he started to work as a coordination assistant and researcher in the HELICoiD European project, co-funded by the European Commission. In 2018, he performs a research stay in the Department of Bioengineering within the Erik Jonsson School of Engineering and Computer Science at The University of Texas at Dallas, collaborating with Prof. Baowei Fei in the use of medical hyperspectral imaging analysis using deep learning. His research interest area include the use of machine learning and deep learning techniques applied to hyperspectral images to discriminate between healthy and tumor samples for human brain tissues in real-time during neurosurgical operations.

Since then, he has conducted his research activity in the Integrated System Design Division at the Institute for Applied Microelectronics, University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, in the field of electronic and bioengineering. In 2015, he started to work as a coordination assistant and researcher in the HELICoiD European project, co-funded by the European Commission. His current research interests are in the use of machine learning algorithms in medical applications using hyperspectral images.
Margarita Marrero-Martin

She is an Associate Professor at the ULPGC. She received the M.S. degree in telecommunication engineering in 2001 and the Ph.D. degree in 2012, all from the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC), Spain. She researches with the Institute for Applied Microelectronics involved in the Microelectronics Technology Division. Until 2017, her research lines of interest were the characterization, modelling and design of RF integrated passive components. She has participated as a researcher in national and European funded projects, co-authoring more than fifty articles in journal papers and conferences. Since 2017, she changed her field of research to the area of bioengineering, specifically the use of hyperspectral imaging to detect cancer in real time. She has occupied different management positions at the ULPGC.

Since then, she has conducted her research activity in the Integrated System Design Division at the Institute for Applied Microelectronics, University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, in the field of electronic and bioengineering. In 2018, she started to work as a researcher in the ITHaCA European Project. Her current research interests are hyperspectral imaging for real-time cancer detection.
Roberto Sarmiento Rodríguez

Roberto Sarmiento Rodríguez

He is Full-Professor at the Telecommunication Engineering School at University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain, in the area of Electronic Engineering. He contributed to set this school up, he was the Dean of the Faculty from 1994 to 1995 and Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Staff at the ULPGC from 1998 to 2003. In 1993, he was a Visiting Professor at the University of Adelaida, South Australia, and later at the University of Edith Cowan, also in Australia. He is a founder of the Research Institute for Applied Microelectronics (IUMA) and Director of the Integrated Systems Design Division of this Institute. Since 1990 he has published more than 50 journal papers and book chapters and more than 140 conference papers. Roberto Sarmiento has been awarded with four six years research periods by the National Agency for the Research Activity Evaluation in Spain. He has participated in more than 45 projects and research programmes funded by public and private organizations, from which he has been leader researcher in 16 of them.

He received the electronic engineering degree from the University of La Laguna, San Cristóbal de La Laguna, Spain, in 2001, and the Ph.D. degree in electronic engineering from the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, in 2006. He is currently an Associate Professor with the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, where he is involved in research activities with the Integrated Systems Design Division, Institute for Applied Microelectronics. He has authored or co-authored more than 100 papers in international journals and conferences. His research interests include real-time hyperspectral imaging, reconfigurable architectures, high-performance computating systems, and image and video processing.,Dr. López was a recipient of regional and national awards during his electronic engineering degree. He is an Associate Editor of the IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Applied Earth Observations and Remote Sensing and the Mathematical Problems in Engineering Journal. He was an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Consumer Electronics from 2008 to 2013. He also is an active reviewer for different journals and program committee member of different international conferences.

She was born in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain, in 1968. She received the Ph.D. degree in computer science from the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, in 2004. She is currently an Associate Professor with the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, where she has been a member of the Institute for Applied Microelectronics (IUMA) since 1995. She collaborated with the Laboratory of Distributed Systems of the Technical University of Madrid for five years (2004–2009) in different research projects funded by the European Community and Spanish Government. She is currently developing her research activities at the Integrated Systems Design Division, IUMA. Her research interests include architecture, implementation, performance evaluation, and algorithms for parallel computing. Dr. Martel received a special award in 2009 from ANECA (Spanish agency for the evaluation of the research activity) for her research on the semantic recommendation systems.
Jesús Morera Molina

He is Specialist in Neurosurgery. He is currently the head of Neurosurgery at the University Hospital Dr. Negrin in Gran Canaria and lecturer at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. He has a Masters in Healthcare Management from the University of Pompeu Fabra. He has been Deputy Director of the University Hospital Dr. Negrin, member of the Board of the College of Physicians of Las Palmas and of the National Commission on Neurosurgery. Presently, Jesus Morera is a Member of the Parliament of the Canary Islands.
Adam Zbigniew Szolna

He is a Specialist in Neurosurgery. He is currently a member of the permanent staff of Neurosurgery Department at the University Hospital Dr. Negrin in Gran Canaria. He received the M.D. degree by the Medical University of Lodz, Poland, in 1998, and the PhD degree by the same university in 2005, as a result of a five year clinical study conducted on the patients operated for dystonia as well as a work as a co-author of a book Functional Neurosurgery. His current research interests are hyperspectral imaging and real-time intraoperative brain tumour detection, participating in the HELICOID project as a PI. He is a member of Spanish Society of Neurosurgeons, European Society for Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery, Section of Stereotaxy and Functional Neurosurgery of Polish Society of Neurosurgeons and Polish Society of Neurosurgeons. He was serving 16 years for Military Health Service of Poland and NATO, up to the rank of major.
Juan F. Piñeiro Martí

He is Specialist in Neurosurgery. He received the Doctor in Medicine degree by the High Institute of Medical Sciences of Villa Clara, Cuba, in 1993. He is member of the Spanish Society of Neurosurgery, the Cuban Society of Neurology and Neurosurgery and the European Association of Neurological Surgeons. His research interests include Head Trauma, Neurovascular Surgery and application of new technologies for oncological Neurosurgery. He is author of a book chapter and several papers and contributions to technical conferences. He is former head of Neurosurgical Department in Dr. Gustavo Aldereguia Hospital, in Cienfuegos, Cuba. Presently he works as Specialist in Neurosurgery at Dr. Negrín Hospital and Vithas Santa Catalina Hospital, in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
Bernardino Clavo Varas

He is a Radiation Oncologist and is an investigator of REDISSEC (Health Services Research on Chronic Patients Network). He is currently the head of the Research Unit at the University Hospital Dr. Negrin in Gran Canaria and he is staff of the Chronic Pain Unit and the Radiation Oncology Department. He received the M.D. degree by the Medical University of Alcala de Henares, Madrid, in 1988, and the PhD degree by the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid in 2004 (its Thesis about Brain Tumours was Extraordinary Award in 2005 at the same University). He is currently member of the ASCO (American Society of Clinical Oncology), ASTRO (American Society for Radiation Oncology), EACR (European Association for Cancer Research), ISCO3 (International Scientific Committee of Ozone Therapy), and Spanish Societies of Pain (SED) or Radiation Oncology (SEOR) among others. He has authored or co-authored more than 87 papers in international journals and 81 international conferences. He has been reviewer for international journals, and he has been reviewer of 12 research works for the Spanish National Agency for Evaluation and Prospective (ANEP). He has participated in 22 Competitive Grants, where he was the main researcher in 6 of them. He has participated in 9 clinical trials.

She is a Specialist in Neurosurgery. She is currently a member of the staff of Neurosurgery Department at the University Hospital Dr. Negrin in Gran Canaria. She is a PhD candidate at the University of La Laguna, Tenerife, Spain. Her current research interests are in vascular neurosurgery and she is actually part of the Neuro Interventionist Radiology team at the University Hospital Dr. Negrin in Gran Canaria. She completed her training with a fellowship in vascular neurosurgery at the University Hospital of Helsinki, Finland along with observerships at Teishinkai Hospital in Japan and at Toronto Western Hospital, Canada. She is a member of the College of Physicians of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spanish Society of Neurosurgeons and European Society of Neurosurgery.
Sara Bisshopp Alfonso

She is a Specialist in Neurosurgery. She received the M.D. by the Medicine High School of La Laguna University, Spain in 2009. She finalized with Honors Degree. She is also a member of the Spanish Society of Neurosurgery and the European Society of Neurosurgery. She has performed a 3- month’s rotation internship in the Pediatrics Unit of Hospital Virgen del Rocio, Seville. She completed her training in Spine Surgery too with a 3-months rotation internship in the Spine Unit of Virgen del Rocío Hospital. Because of her interest in oncological Neurosurgical research, she has participated in the HELICOID Project as co-investigator. At the present time, she is a member of the staff of Neurosurgery Department at the University Hospital Dr. Negrín in Gran Canaria.

She is an Specialist in Neurosurgery. She is currently a member of the staff of Neurosurgery Department at the University Hospital Dr. Negrin in Gran Canaria. She received the M.D. degree by the Medical Faculty of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, in 2007, and the PhD degree by the same university in 2016, as a result of a clinical study on the patients subaracnoid haemorrhage in poor grade neurological status. Her current research interests are hyperspectral imaging and real-time intraoperative brain tumour detection, participating in the HELICOID project as a PI. She trained for 4 months at the Addembrooke hospital in Cambridge on brain cancer surgery. She is a member of Spanish and European Society of Neurosurgeons.

María Luz Plaza Pérez

She is Specialist in Histopathology at the University Hospital Dr. Negrin in Gran Canaria (department of histopathology). She received PhD degree by ULPGC in 2002 where she is currently Associate Professor of Histopathology at the Faculty of Medicine. She is member of SEAP (Spanish Society of Pathologic Anatomy).
Rafael Camacho Galán

He is Specialist in Pathology. He is the former Head of Pathology Department at University Hospital Dr. Negrin in Gran Canaria, where nowadays is working as a general pathologist and especially as nephropathologist. He is the Head of the Department of Electron Microscopy in the Pathology Department. He is member of the European Nephropatology Working Group, the College of Physicians of Las Palmas and the Spanish Society of Pathologists.
